Ochsner Health System’s expanding footprint in the Baton Rouge region is bringing increased access, innovation and services to patients closer to where they live. Ochsner’s expansion over the past two years is not only following the new residential growth and needed services in this expanding region, but also the desire for increased patient-centered care from an innovative health care system.
Robotic Surgery
Being part of a larger health care system offers Ochsner Medical Center–Baton Rouge and eight local health centers a number of advantages. For example, Ochsner Health System has one of the largest gynecological robotics practices in the South. There are a limited number of hospitals in the country performing these surgeries robotically. Local Ochsner urology surgeons Drs. Dudley Atkinson and Joseph Dean have been using the da Vinci prostatectomy robotic technology.
Robotic surgery, unlike traditional surgery, gives surgeons a greater visualization and depth of field and allows precise micro-movements through dime-size incisions. This means patients experience substantially less pain, a shorter recovery period, less scarring and decreased chance of infection than with traditional prostate surgery. Recent studies suggest that the da Vinci prostatectomy may offer improved cancer control and a lower incidence of impotence and urinary incontinence.
Anytime access to medical records
In addition to innovative surgical procedures, Ochsner understands that patients want more hands-on involvement in their care and/or the care of their family members. With this in mind, Ochsner implemented an electronic medical record (EMR) that streamlines patient care and improves outcomes. The system empowers patients to be more involved in their health care by being able to manage their appointments, check test results and access their health care bills and patient education from their smart phones. Enhancing our patients’ coordination of care across our clinics through the EMR system provides a continuum of care unlike any other health care facility in the region. This offers a peace of mind to all Ochsner patients and family members.
Ochsner’s patient portal, MyOchsner, offers patients personalized and secure online access to portions of their medical records. It enables patients to securely use the Internet to help manage and receive information about their health. Through MyOchsner, patients can schedule medical appointments, view their health summary from their electronic health record, receive test results, request prescription renewals, and communicate electronically and securely with their medical care team.
Growth outside Baton Rouge
Ochsner’s expanded footprint in the Baton Rouge region includes Ochsner Medical Center–Baton Rouge, located off O’Neal Lane, in addition to health center locations on Jefferson Highway, Bluebonnet Boulevard, Harding Boulevard and O’Neal Lane, as well as locations in Central, Denham Springs, Prairieville and Plaquemine. Due to the immediate need for emergency care in the Plaquemine area, Ochsner has partnered with Iberville Parish to build a free-standing emergency and ambulatory care center. The new facility is slated to open in 2014.
Emergency care in 30 minutes or less—guaranteed
The Ochsner Medical Center–Baton Rouge campus has undergone major renovations over the past two years. All patient rooms have been completely remodeled and updated. Also, new ICU and labor and delivery departments were added, and the Ochsner Critical Care Telemedicine Program ―designed to enhance critical care―was recently launched. The Critical Care Telemedicine Program connects Ochsner’s bedside care teams with off-site critical care physicians and nurses using advanced software and continuous remote monitoring technology.
The two-way audio/video capability allows the off-site intensivist to interact and collaborate with the ICU bedside medical team and the patient’s family in order to make important, time-sensitive patient care decisions. Ochsner is the only health care provider in Louisiana with the Critical Care Telemedicine Program technology.
Birthing options that make Mom and Dad feel safer
Ochsner is also the only hospital in the area to provide moms-to-be with the option of utilizing a certified nurse midwife and a selection of alternative birthing options such as a water birth. Ochsner’s eight certified nurse midwife birthing partners are giving expectant mothers more of a voice in their birthing plan. The birthing center at Ochsner’s O’Neal location is part of a growing trend of mothers choosing birthing centers for a relaxed atmosphere.
What means the most to us is what our patients tell us, and we’ve listened. Ochsner consistently receives high patient satisfaction scores and continues to improve upon providing the finest healing environment to give and receive care.
Thank you for choosing Ochsner for your health care.
HISTORIC SURGERIES
Ochsner is also becoming known for groundbreaking surgeries. Surgical teams at Ochsner Medical Center recently performed the Gulf South’s first life-changing in utero surgery for spina bifida repair. Historically, this surgery would have only been able to take place at programs in California, Tennessee or Pennsylvania, where patients would have to remain for up to eight weeks for follow-up care. Since the first successful in utero spina bifida repair in 1997, only a few hospitals in the country have performed this surgery because it involves specialists from numerous high-end departments (including maternal fetal medicine, pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric cardiology, plastic surgery, general surgery, pediatrics, ICU, NICU and anesthesia). Additionally, physicians at the John Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute at Ochsner Medical Center implanted the Gulf South region’s first Total Artificial Heart.
ENHANCED HOURS
Ochsner’s emergency and urgent care services have also been improved. Door-to-doctor ER wait times are approximately 20 minutes with the new qTrack triage patient delivery system, which streamlines the emergency department triage process to reduce wait times. For non-emergent care, Ochsner Health Center–Bluebonnet, located across from the Mall of Louisiana, now has extended urgent care hours Mon.-Fri., 8 a.m.-8 p.m., and Sat., 8 a.m.-1 p.m., and urgent care services are also being offered at the Ochsner Health Center–Prairieville Urgent Care Clinic on Airline Highway, Mon.-Fri., 10 a.m.-10 p.m. In addition to extended urgent care hours, Ochsner is also offering patients the ability to make same day appointments.
