Employees are the most important part of an organization, and their well-being directly affects productivity, disposition and quality of work. Company leaders are paying more attention to how they can deal with rising health care costs, decreased productivity, increased absenteeism and high turnover. More and more employers are looking to wellness programs at work for solutions to these problems!
SB Wellness Group began 18 years ago to pioneer worksite wellness in the Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. With Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Louisiana as its first client, the group helped develop, implement and manage its programs and over the years has expanded to working and consulting with several of its groups and other companies in the area. With a good understanding of the challenges companies face, SB Wellness Group develops customized solutions for managing wellness and helping businesses create a culture of wellness and productivity.
Shelly Beall, owner of SB Wellness Group, says it is all about building relationships!
“Health and wellness is a very personal thing,” Beall notes. “You can’t just administer screenings or a health risk assessment and instigate real and permanent change in most people. You have to have relationships, support and trust. That’s where we shine in this industry!”
SB Wellness Group has built a strong business by creating connections with people in a variety of workplace environments. These connections are the foundation for developing an in-depth understanding of what truly motivates people. The group is able to create company cultures that promote and nurture wellness in individual employees while enhancing the fiscal health of the company.
Katie Uter Normand, vice president of SB Wellness Group, says another important aspect is continued contact and programming. “Our clients who have us in their businesses, interacting with their employees, on a regular basis are the ones that we see the most significant changes in. It’s so rewarding to hear from employees first hand and then to also see the proof in the numbers that health factors and well-being are improving. We see things like 60% of a group participating regularly are losing weight, employees are quitting smoking or getting off medications, all due to improvements in lifestyle behaviors. Our team works with these employees to set goals and make changes that have a real impact on their health.”
Beall says, “We have built our business on word of mouth and good reputation. Our team is so passionate and works so well together and with our clients. We have longevity with our clients. Many of our groups, like LWCC, Cracker Barrel Stores and Shaw (now CB&I) have been using our team for their wellness programs for seven or more years!”
Beall and Normand say there are a few strategies that are important to having a successful wellness program and a happy, healthy, and engaged workforce.
1. Be Informed. SB Wellness Group identifies hidden threats before they become costly medical problems through their biometric health screenings and assessments. “We focus on primary prevention and keeping healthy people healthy, while also focusing on secondary prevention to help unhealthy participants achieve a more healthy and balanced life,” says Normand.
2. Be Influenced. Regular interaction between SB Wellness Group and a group’s employees is key for successful lifestyle change. “We turn desire into action and help people make intentions a reality with one-on-one support and encouragement through wellness coaching,” says Beall.
3. Be Inspired. Help employees stay motivated for change through regular programs, education or activity sessions, communications and marketing. Studies show that individuals who receive ongoing support and education will be more likely to experience a permanent shift in behavior. “We see that the clients that have us on-site, meeting with their employees regularly, are the most successful,” says Beall. “Our clients tell us all of the time that they appreciate how easy we make incorporating wellness into their workplace. We go above and beyond to ease the burden from employers and HR or benefits managers. We cover and support all steps of the wellness process, from planning to implementing and managing!”
Wellness programming encompasses so many elements. Each company and each employee is unique and has a different set of challenges. Shelly says that SB Wellness has developed its program over the years to meet those differences. “We have built a team of people who are experts at what they do. We have also created programs that incorporate these team members to bring well-rounded services to our groups and clients.”
One of these team players is SB’s registered dietitian, Emily Fields. “I love being able to offer my services with SB,” Fields says. “Working with their team makes my job easier and my clients more successful because overall lifestyle is always being addressed in our programs. I know that just addressing diet isn’t always going to create results. When mental/emotional aspects of health are being addressed through wellness coaching and weight management programs, participants are more likely to achieve long-term nutritional changes.”
Another popular request in worksite wellness is helping companies reach spouses and dependents. SB Wellness Group keeps this in mind in their programming. “We want to make the biggest impact that we can and we want to reach as many lives as we can,” says Beall. “In the past we’ve done this through education and other programs. As we grow our company and strive to work with more businesses, we are also expanding on this aspect. We hope to involve family members more through our new app being developed, our Facebook page, our blog and other programs.”
