It’s a tough challenge to be up to speed on the full breadth of dermatology, but at Calais Dermatology Associates in Baton Rouge, Drs. Connor Patterson, John Brantley and Christopher McEwen pride themselves on both broad-based expertise and providing a family-oriented dermatology group where patients can expect the highest level of care and service with every visit.
“We want to give patients time, attention and expertise,” says Dr. Patterson. “We are all board-certified dermatologists who keep up with our training and the latest in caring for the health of the skin.” (In fact, we caught up with Dr. Patterson for this article on his way to a regional dermatology meeting recently.) They enjoy treating patients of all ages, from newborn to our “greatest generation.” Their interests include challenging acne, skin cancer surveillance and treatment, the itch of eczema, and patient education. In fact, Dr. McEwen is one of the leading dermatologists for psoriasis in the region. They are well versed in the latest biologic therapies for psoriasis and the recent developments in acne/rosacea.
The doctors not only specialize in traditional medical dermatology and skin cancer, but they offer a wide variety of skin-rejuvenating cosmetic procedures as well. They utilize several advanced lasers to target the melanin or blood vessels in the skin to clear up brown and red spots. The recent ultrasound technology device Ulthera helps with skin laxity in the face and neck, gradually strengthening and toning skin from deep within. And, of course, they offer Botox and the latest injectable fillers such as Juvederm Voluma and Belotero for wrinkles. “We keep abreast of all the latest cosmetic as well as medical therapies/procedures and decide carefully if they may benefit our patients,” Dr. Patterson notes.
Calais Dermatology is the ideal choice for the patient who doesn’t want to be shuffled through today’s multiple layers of care before seeing a doctor for their skin problem. You will be seen initially and every time by your board-certified dermatologist. It is extremely uncommon for patients to wait any extended amount of time to be seen. To accommodate their patients, the doctors have Saturday hours every other weekend, and are open from 7 a.m. until 5 or 6 p.m., often seeing patients during the lunch hour. Additionally, Drs. Brantley, McEwen and Patterson practice “cost-conscious medicine,” being aware of their patients’ pocketbooks and deductibles, prescribing generic medicines when appropriate.
You can expect an efficient experience and appropriate follow-up. It’s not unusual for the doctors to place a personal phone call to their patients to check in after a visit or procedure.
The doctors’ commitment to their patients and their practice is evidenced by their low turnover of both staff and patients. Several staff members have virtually grown up in the office, today serving as office managers and registered nurses. “We have many who are fourth-generation Calais patients,” Dr. Patterson says, a history that dates back to when Dr. Brantley’s former partner, Dr. Charles Black, began the practice in 1951. Dr. Brantley joined him in 1980, establishing the current practice name and location (on old Calais Family land) at 5220 Flanders Drive, near Our Lady of the Lake. Dr. Black retired in 1990, and Dr. McEwen joined the practice in 1995 after serving as the head of dermatology at Ochsner Clinic in Baton Rouge for nine years. In September 2010, Dr. Patterson joined the practice to make it a three-physician group specializing in general dermatology.
In a time when medical spas are popping up everywhere, it’s important to know you still have the option of trusting the care of your skin to the capable hands of board-certified dermatologists at a practice that has been around for 60 years.
