WAFB-TV Channel 9

The studio cameras started rolling on Government Street in 1953. At that time WAFB-TV became the first television station in Baton Rouge. Sixty years later that innovative spirit and commitment to the community lives on, as Baton Rouge’s most-watched news station is now available to more people in more ways than ever before.

By its very definition, breaking news does not wait. With that in mind, WAFB Channel 9 works around the clock to meet the ever-changing needs of its viewers by delivering breaking news on multiple platforms. Each weekday the CBS affiliate produces 31 hours of local news beginning at 4:30 a.m. with 9News Early Edition. 9News This Morning, Noon, 5, 6 and 10 dominate the Nielsen ratings and have become our community’s clear choice for local news.

For hundreds of thousands across the Capital Region, their 24-hour digital home for news is WAFB.com. A proven resource for great local stories, WAFB.com receives more than 3 million page views per month. For mobile devices, including tablets, the station offers the WAFB News and WAFB Weather apps. Each month the station’s apps receive more than one million unique users and more than 10 million page views.

“We always work to invest our resources in stories and investigations that have a real impact on where people live, work and raise their families. We feel our digital platforms (WAFB.com and news apps) help us enhance that commitment. Viewers want to know about the story as it happens, and they also want to watch and see how the story develops. We are able to provide both,” says WAFB News Director Robb Hays.

The station’s reach on social media is widespread and growing, with more fans on Facebook and followers on Twitter than any other local news station. “We thrive from interacting with our audience,” Hays says. Community engagement is further demonstrated by WAFB’s cultivation of strong partnerships and sponsorship of events, as well as spearheading some of this community’s largest fundraising drives.

Innovation and investment in the community is top of mind at WAFB Channel 9, as the station is currently undergoing a nearly $1 million upgrade and remodel to the News and Creative Services Departments. Once the project is completed, it will provide even more opportunities for the station to deliver the best in local news, sports and weather.

“We are fortunate to live in an area where people are passionate about our community,” says General Manager Sandy Breland. “As Baton Rouge continues to thrive, you can count on WAFB to be there every step of the way.”
